While football is predominant in Dromore with St Dympna’s GFC being the current Tyrone Senior county champions the town has also had Under-age Hurling teams participating in Tyrone competitions since 2001.
The first evidence of Hurling in Dromore can be traced back to the early 1900’s and indeed this area has the distinction of having hosted the first ever game of Hurling in Tyrone. The local Club known as Glassmullagh with a combination of players from the Dromore and Trillick areas won the Tyrone Senior championship in 1949.
With the assistance of local teacher Brian Mc Carron a school team was started in St John’s College in the year 2000. This team with current senior player Cathal Mc Carron aged 14 playing a starring role went on to win the West Tyrone U16 Vocational schools title.
Following on from this success and in an attempt to revive hurling in the area Naomh Eoin Hurling Club An Droim mor was established in the year 2001. We started with U10’s and this year along with U12’s we will participate at U14 level. The players have benefited from coaching sessions given by former Tyrone county hurler Conal Quinn and senior hurler Niall Mc Laughlin. This will be our sixth year to participate in the Ulster feile having thoroughly enjoyed last years experience where we reached the Division 5 final.
