Lavey 3-18 v Madden 2-05
The Derry and Armagh champions Lavey and Madden met in the remaining quarter final of the Paul Mc Girr Champions Tournament on Saturday afternoon. After a high scoring game laced with great scores Lavey made it through to the last four where they will come face to face with one of the favourites for the tournament Down champions Burren.
Lavey startled well and early points from James Mc Gurk and Enda Downey enabled them to settle quickly. Downey’s point came after a strong run from the mid fielder whose shot drew a brilliant save from Madden goalkeeper Shane Grimley.
Leading 0-3 to no score after nine minutes following a fine finish from centre back Jamie Duggan Lavey appeared to be in total control. Playing in their first ever Paul Mc Girr Tournament Madden finally shook off the lethargy that had affected them in the opening nine minutes. Driven forward by Shea Vallely , Eoin Donnelly and Joshua King they rattled the net twice inside two minutes with fine finishes from Eoin Grimley and Oisin O’Hara.
Suddenly it was game on and both sides produced some superb football but Lavey’s ability to finish proved crucial. Full forward Mathew Downey, Jack Scullion and Patrick Mc Gurk added points to push their side four points clear. With four minutes of the half left a lovely move from the Derry side was finished to the net by Matthew Downey and Madden now had a mountain to climb. Lavey added two further points to reach the break leading by nine in a score of 2-10 to 2-1.
Madden needed a big start to the second half but Lavey showed they are not only a fine attacking team. Their midfield and defence worked tirelessly to restrict their opponents in terms of time and space. The Armagh lads struggled for scores and in spite of the best efforts of the impressive Darragh Mc Mullan, Eoin Grimley and Tiernan Mc Goldrick five points was all they had to show for their second half efforts. The score line does not reflect the efforts of the Madden lads and their performance deserved a much better return in the scoreboard.
Lavey cut loose at times in the second half producing some superb moves and taking some excellent scores. Matthew Downey continued to cause havoc for the Madden defence while Rory Mc Gill, James Mc Gurk and Enda Downey maintained a steady supply of ball to their inside forwards.
Any chance Madden had of making a game of it disappeared when Matthew Downey finished to the net after a surging run from wide on the left midway through the half.
That score put fifteen points between the teams but the challenges continued to be feisty and after a coming together of sorts, referee Kieran Eannetta handed out three yellows and a straight red reducing Lavey to fourteen players for the remainder of the game.
Being a man short did not seem to impact on their style of play or performance and further scores from James Mc Gurk and Enda Downey ensured the score board operator remained gainfully employed.
